Are Tattoos Going Out of Style? Here’s What Reddit Users Think

Will tattoos go out of style? That’s the question that the Good Housekeeping Institute set out to answer in their recent article, Is Body Art on the Decline? In it, they investigate what the future might hold for tattoos, piercings and other forms of body modification. If you’re worried about whether it’s time to get your tramp stamp removed, or if you’re just interested in staying up-to-date with body art trends, this article will be particularly interesting to you! I have a tattoo

In fact, 63% of millennials have at least one tattoo. I thought it would be interesting to see how our generation (and younger) compares to older demographics when it comes to body art. So, I set out to find out if tattoos are actually going out of style and what people think about them. Read on for some interesting results and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

I do NOT have a tattoo

I do NOT want a tattoo: I have a tattoo and I love it: I don’t care about tattoos at all. They are stupid.

Which tattoos are most popular nowadays
It’s hard to say what tattoos are most popular. Different regions and cultures have different tastes, and there are a number of unique designs that aren’t exactly mainstream but that remain wildly popular within certain groups. In general, though, it seems like sleeve tattoos and chest pieces are pretty common these days—at least on Instagram. Both can be difficult to cover up when you want or need to dress conservatively, which is why many choose them.

Which aren’t

Anecdotal evidence is not hard data. It can be a good place to start a conversation, but it doesn’t give you a real picture of what’s going on in society. For example, there are plenty of reasons why tattoos could be going out of style: Maybe fewer people are getting them because they’re expensive and painful. Maybe more people want to show their age. Maybe teenagers were just waiting for social media so they could decide whether or not they wanted one on their face before making that kind of commitment. Take all trending topics with a grain of salt; you’ll never really know what’s happening until you get hard numbers behind an argument.

In your opinion, are they going out of style now? Why or why not?

I don’t think they will ever go out of style because people still want to look unique and express themselves. In my opinion, tattoos are one way to do so. They give you something to talk about with someone and that can be a great thing when trying to find common interests with another person. I personally love tattoos and if I had money, I would get more but for now I just have a few and one day, maybe someday soon, I’ll get more but until then ink stays in!

If you have any other thoughts on the topic, feel free to elaborate.

From neck tats to leg tats, tattoos are everywhere. The art form continues to grow in popularity and as it does, it’s getting more mainstream attention than ever before. And while they are definitely growing in popularity, it may surprise you to learn just how much ink enthusiasts actually have. A 2012 study published by Dermatology Online Journal found that nearly half (44%) of those surveyed had at least one tattoo—and a quarter of respondents said they had five or more. Half (49%) were under 40 years old and nearly two-thirds were younger than 30 when they first got inked up; 40% reported getting their first tattoo between ages 18 and 21.
